British-Nigerian artist and designer Yinka Ilori MBE has partnered with Starbucks UK to launch The Starbucks Illustration Club, a nationwide competition inviting the public to turn the chain’s coffee cup into a canvas.

Open to anyone 18 and older, the contest welcomes aspiring illustrators, design students, and creative hobbyists alike.

Entering is simple: pick up a hot drink at any Starbucks UK store, illustrate the cup by hand, then post a photo to Instagram tagging @StarbucksUK.

Entries run from August 3 through 21, 2026. Ilori will judge alongside Starbucks barista-artist Aaron Gonzales, illustrator Rob Draper, and Starbucks EMEA store design director Paola Tassara Oromí. A winner and nine runners-up will be announced September 7.

The winner receives one-on-one mentorship from Ilori and sees their design featured across a nationwide outdoor campaign; runners-up also get billboard exposure and creative prizes.

The launch builds on Starbucks’ recent “Made in Starbucks” campaign and follows brand-commissioned research finding that 72% of UK Gen Z and Millennials consider themselves creative.

The designer has had a packed 2026. He served as creative director for Absolut Vodka’s festival activation at Tomorrowland Belgium, unveiled a “Chasing the Sun” collection with Veuve Clicquot at Milan Design Week, launched a 40-piece homeware range with Dunelm (the start of a three-year deal), released a cycling apparel line with Rapha, and previously fronted a capsule collection with The North Face.

For Starbucks, creative and celebrity tie-ins have become a steady part of its 2026 marketing playbook. The brand tapped Adrian Grenier to front its Energy Refreshers launch, brought Taylor Rooks and Jared McCain together for an activation at Fanatics Fest NYC, and ran a “Fantasy” summer campaign across Asia Pacific starring Jay Chou.

Takeaways

Starbucks isn’t just handing out a sponsorship check here; it’s handing an emerging illustrator a national billboard and a mentor with real design-world clout.

Pairing a decorated public artist like Ilori with an open, no-portfolio-required contest is a smart way to turn a disposable object millions of people already hold every day into a genuine talent pipeline, not just an ad unit.

Could turning an everyday object like a coffee cup into a talent search become a model other retailers copy? Does mentorship from an established name like Ilori carry more long-term value for a winner than a one-off paid campaign would?
