- Yahoo Sports unveiled "Back to School," a new campaign starring Robert Griffin III to mark the debut of Yahoo College Fantasy Football.
- RGIII believes he's landed a second shot at playing college football, only to learn the "offer" is actually to play Yahoo College Fantasy Football.
- The campaign arrives as drafts officially open for Yahoo College Fantasy Football, a new season-long game covering the Power 4 conferences plus Notre Dame.
- More than a third of the game's early registrants are first-timers to Yahoo Fantasy, part of a month-long slate of fantasy football news from the platform.
Robert Griffin III is heading back to school. The 2011 Heisman Trophy winner and former Baylor quarterback fronts Yahoo Sports’ new “Back to School” campaign, launched August 3, 2026, to mark the debut of Yahoo College Fantasy Football.
In the 30-second spot, Griffin believes he’s earned a second shot at playing college ball. He moves back into the dorms, pulls all-nighters over playbooks, and runs drills like it’s game week, only to learn the “offer” was actually to play Yahoo College Fantasy Football, not run routes on Saturdays.
“We all wish we could relive the college days,” Griffin said of the campaign. “We can’t actually go back to play college football, but by playing Yahoo College Fantasy Football, we can still take the W.”
The spot, made with ad agency BBDO and directed by Martín Holzman of production house Partizan, runs across Yahoo’s Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube channels.
It builds on the recent launch of Yahoo College Fantasy Football, which covers the Power 4 conferences and Notre Dame with expanded rosters and a new team “Offense” position. Yahoo says more than a third of the game’s early registrants are first-timers to Yahoo Fantasy.
This is a fitting moment for Griffin, whose media career has stayed busy since leaving ESPN in 2024. He joined Fox Sports as a college football analyst in 2025, fronted Snickers’ “SatisFORTUNES” campaign that same year, and in March announced he’s chasing a spot on the USA flag football team ahead of its 2028 Olympic debut.
For Yahoo, the campaign continues a pattern of leaning on star power to sell its products. Earlier this year, Cardi B fronted Yahoo Mail’s “Cardi B Busy” AI Planner campaign, and Yahoo Sports recently teamed up with Cameo to let fantasy players book personalized celebrity videos.
Griffin’s campaign also lands the same summer Saquon Barkley fronted a national campaign for DIRECTV, a reminder of how central football-season tie-ins have become for brands right now.
Takeaways
Yahoo didn’t just cast a football name; it cast a punchline. Leaning into Griffin’s real “what if I could go back” nostalgia turns a fantasy football launch ad into a mini comedy sketch, a smarter play than a straight feature rundown.
Timing matters too. Dropping the spot right as drafts open puts Griffin in front of fans at the exact moment they’re choosing where to play, not after.
And Griffin keeps proving he’s more than a former No. 2 overall pick. Between Fox Sports, Snickers, and a real shot at Olympic flag football, he’s built a second act that keeps brands calling.
Does self-deprecating comedy make athletes more relatable spokespeople, or does it risk undercutting their credibility? Could Yahoo College Fantasy Football’s early traction reshape how platforms compete for the college football audience?
