Rapper and actor Jeffrey Atkins, who performs under the name Ja Rule, was born on February 29, 1976, in Queens, New York. His rap career officially took off in 1993 when he joined the hip hop group known as Cash Money Click, and was quickly christened as Ja Rule by a friend. The name stuck, and in 1995 he lent vocals to the song “Time to Build” along with Jay-Z and DMX. Ja Rule was signed to Def Jam Records, and released his debut album Venni Vetti Vecci in 1999, which went to #3 on the Billboard 200 chart and was later certified Platinum. The single that carried the album is widely said to be “Holla Holla”. The early 2000s would be a busy time for the rapper; he released the triple Platinum-selling album Rule 3:36 in 2000, featuring the hit single “Between Me and You” with Christina Milian; the Grammy nominated, triple Platinum-selling album Pain is Love in 2001, featuring the #1 single “Always on Time” with Ashanti; the Platinum album The Last Temptation in 2002; the controversial album Blood in My Eye in 2003, which initiated a feud with various G-Unit/Shady/Aftermath artists; and R.U.L.E. in 2004, which was certified Gold.

After leaving Def Jam Records, Ja Rule founded the label Mpire Music Group, and later digitally released the album The Mirror in 2009 and Pain is Love 2 in 2012. He has won an array of awards, including the MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Video for “I’m Real (Murder Remix)” in 2002 and the 2002 World Music Award for World’s Best-Selling Rap Artist. Ja Rule has also appeared in various films, such as The Fast and the Furious, Scary Movie 3, Shall We Dance, and I’m in Love with a Church Girl.
