Purple Mountains is a moniker adopted by the late poet and alternative-country singer and songwriter David Berman. Berman was born in 1967 in Williamsburg, Virginia. In 1989 Berman came together with two college friends, the guitarist and singer Stephen Malkmus, and the drummer Bob Nastanovich, and formed the Silver Jews. The band subsequently moved to New York and developed a cult-like following for Berman’s writing through the 90s and early 2000s, with successful releases like 1994’s “Starlite Walker”. After taking a break from musicianship, Berman was featured in two singles from the Avalanches, titled “A Cowboy Overflow of the Heart” (2012), and “Saturday Night Inside Out” (2016). In 2019 he recruited Woods' members Jeremy Earl and Jarvis Taveniere to record the “Purple Mountains” LP, which came out in July that year. Berman passed away in August 2019.
