Eddy Balzola, a Cuban guitarist and songwriter, founded ORIENTE in the early 1990s, when Cuban roots music in South Florida was still being overshadowed by Latin pop and cookie-cutter Salsa. Eddy's strong regard for his roots, as well as Jazz and Blues, as well as a longstanding love affair with early 1970s Soul music, were important inspirations on his new musical voyage, which finally set ORIENTE apart from other great Latin Jazz ensembles.

The band's official debut was at Snug Harbor, New Orleans' top jazz club, with only a shaky cassette recording and the word of a respected New Orleans musician. Snug's crowd was used to really dynamic and progressive music, and ORIENTE gave that and more with raw energy.
