About Celso Piña
Celso Piña, aka El Rebelde del Acordeón (the Accordion Rebel), was a notable Mexican singer, composer and accordionist, Born April 6, 1953 in Monterrey, Nuevo León. He died on August 21, 2019, at 66. He was known for mixing or blending sounds of genres from tropical music, rock, reggae, ska, hip-hop to North Mexican rhythms. His mega-hit Cumbia Sobre El Rio was included on the album Barrio Bravo. Many of his popular songs feature artists like Lila Downs, Control Machete, El Gran Silencio, Café Tacuva, Julieta Venegas.
He started playing traditional music very young along with his brothers Eduardo, Rubén, and Enrique. Influenced by Aníbal Velasquez and Alfredo Gutiérrez, the brothers changed their style back in the 1980s and formed the group Celso Piña y su Ronda Bogotá. He was nominated for two Latin Grammy Awards: Best Contemporary Tropical Album and Best New Artist from the North as well as for Best Alternative Artist by the MTV Latino Awards.
