Shane Koyczan is a Canadian spoken word poet and writer who was born on May 22, 1976, in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories but grew up in Penticton, British Columbia. He studied creative writing at Okanagan University College. He has published many books, including “I’m Calling You Friend”, “Help Wanted”, “Stickboy”, “To This Day: For the Bullied and Beautiful” and “The Basement in My Attic”. He also has published many recordings, such as “Perfect”, “Visiting Hours”, “A Pretty Decent Cape in My Closet”, “Remembrance Year” and “Debris”. In 2000 he won the Championship at the National Poetry Slam and became the first Canadian to ever win that title. In 2003 he created, alongside fellow Canadian poet C. R. Avery and American poet Mike McGee, the spoken word poet trio “Tons of Fun University”. In 2013 he published an animated video of his poem “To This Day” on YouTube which has over 25 million reproductions. He also received a BC Civil Liberties Award for the Arts because of his social work.
