About Floetry
Floetry is an English 90’s R&B duo composed of vocalists Marsha “The Songstress” Ambrosius (8 August 1977) and Natalie “The Floacist” Stewart (13 February 1979). The two met through playing basketball and formed a friendship from high school to college. Starting on the spoken word and performance poetry scene, Ambrosius invited Stewart to add a poetry verse to a song she was currently writing which they performed together at a venue in London. It was not until 1997 that the duo began to write music together and debuted themselves at Floetry. Sometime in 2000, the pair moved to the US, first to Atlanta then to Philadelphia, where they began to emerge in the music scene through their powerful songwriting. Floetry wrote for Jill Scott, Glenn Lewis, Bilal and Michael Jackson for his hit, ‘Butterflies’. Eventually, Floetry met Julius Erving III in Philadelphia in the mid-2000, who instantly signed up to be their manager and introduced them to Jeff Townes, aka DJ Jazzy Jeff, who was well known in the hip hop scene for his collaboration with The Fresh Prince, Will Smith. Eventually, Floetry was signed with DreamWorks Records in 2002, releasing their debut album ‘Floetic’. The album made the Hot Billboard Charts with their single ‘Say Yes’, which was on the chart for 20 weeks at number 24. The single was Grammy nominated in 2003 and 2004 for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. ‘Floetic’ was also nominated for two Grammy’s in the same year for Best Alternative/Urban Performance and Best Contemporary R&B Album. Floetry released a live album in 2003 titled ‘Floacism’ featuring iconic rapper Mos Def on their track, ‘Wanna B Where U R’. The duo focused on their live performances amidst working on their next album from 2004 to 2005. They toured with the Sugar Water Festival and opened for Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and Queen Latifah in 2005. Later that year, Floetry released their third and final album, ‘Flo’Ology’, debuting at number 2 on the Top R&B Chart and their track off the album, ‘SupaStar’ featuring Common was Grammy nominated in 2005 for Best Urban Alternative Performance. The duo split in 2007, both pursuing a solo career. In 2015, Floetry reunited for a tour around the US and split once again in 2016 upon the end of their tour.
