What’s a cartage fee?

We’re negotiating a contract for a one-time event with a live performance. We don’t do this often, but we did plenty of research before entering negotiations. However, when we received the contract to review, we saw an extra cost listed as a “cartage fee”. Does anyone know what this is?

The cartage fee is likely listed under transportation costs in your agreement. Basically, it is a fee charged to cover transporting the performer’s equipment—anything they need to take with them to put on the performance. You’re probably already footing the bill for some equipment under the production costs, but many artists have their own instruments, wardrobe, or props that they need transported to the event.

It’s a common fee in these types of contracts. Just make sure the price they are requesting is fair. Talk to the celebrity’s representative to find out what exactly they will need transported and how it will be moved from one location to another.
