British retail giant Marks & Spencer has launched its Autumn 2026 womenswear collection, bringing back award-winning actress Gillian Anderson as the face of the seasonal push. Anderson returns to her role as the retailer’s “Chief Compliments Officer.”

Created by creative agency Mother and directed by rubberband through SMUGGLER, the campaign film takes place in the National Art Library at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

Meet autumn’s most wanted. Styles so good everyone will be complimenting, copying and begging to borrow. And the best part? It all comes Chief Compliments Officer approved. Love that. Elbows at the ready. The pieces everyone wants are available to shop online and in stores now.

The spot shows Anderson researching the art of complimenting others before she gets distracted by the stylish women around her, starting a chain reaction of compliments across the room.

Set to the energetic dance track “Let Me Think About It” by Ida Corr vs. Fedde Le Grand, the film showcases autumn staples like a £28 aubergine satin button-through shirt, a £70 faux-fur jacket, and an £85 pinstripe blazer with £46 trousers.

This release marks the third chapter in M&S’s ongoing marketing platform, which launched earlier this year when Gillian Anderson teamed up with the retailer for its Spring 2026 fashion rollout.

The high-street favorite carried that momentum into the warmer months, tapping Amelia Dimoldenberg to play a fictional resort manager for its “Love That” summer ads.

Beyond Anderson and Dimoldenberg, Marks & Spencer boasts a rich history of British star power, including seasonal collaborations with Sienna Miller and Hannah Waddingham.

The campaign arrives during a busy year for Anderson. Best known for her roles in The X-Files, The Crown, and Sex Education, she recently starred in Jane Schoenbrun’s satirical horror film Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, which won the Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2026 before hitting theaters in August.

Anderson also serves as a global ambassador for L’Oréal Paris. In July 2026, she reprised Dana Scully for the Lego Ideas The X-Files launch, pairing with Lego for a special anniversary release.

Marks & Spencer will showcase the new autumn collection further during its debut runway show at London Fashion Week, celebrating 100 years of style across its Collection, Per Una, and Autograph lines.

Takeaways

Marks & Spencer’s decision to bring back Gillian Anderson highlights the commercial strength of treating marketing campaigns like serialized television rather than disconnected ads.

Instead of signing a new ambassador every quarter, M&S created an ongoing character in the “Chief Compliments Officer” that bridges seasonal drops while giving audiences a familiar, humorous figure to follow.

Anderson offers the ideal balance of poise, sharp humor, and high-fashion credibility, which elevates everyday high-street tailoring without making it seem out of reach.

Combining genuine compliment culture with accessible price points helps M&S connect with shoppers emotionally during peak wardrobe-buying months.

With the brand set to walk the London Fashion Week runway for the first time, keeping Anderson as the primary face of womenswear reinforces M&S’s reputation as a confident, stylish market leader.

Will Marks & Spencer make the “Chief Compliments Officer” a permanent fixture in future holiday and winter campaigns? Does serializing brand characters across multiple seasons create stronger consumer retention than one-off celebrity endorsements?
