Thomas Jacob Hilfiger (born March 24, 1951 in New York, USA) is a self-taught fashion designer and the founder of Tommy Hilfiger Corporation.
His fashion career started in 1969 while he was in high school when he started People’s Place, a petite chain of shops with just $150. In 1979, Hilfiger moved to New York City. There he secured a full-time job as a fashion designer. In 1985, he met Mohan Murjani and with his support launched his initial signature clothing line.
Hilfiger’s line became popular when he hired George Lois to make a billboard ad for Times Square in New York. Following his success, Hilfiger launched an online store of his brand and consequently, globalized it.
Hilfiger has won several awards, including the 1998 Designer of the Year Award by New York’s Parsons School of Design and the Man of the Year award by GQ magazine. In 2002, he received the GQ award for International Designer of the Year in Germany. In 2006, once again GQ honored Hilfiger with an award of the year’s best designer. In 2010, he received the Legends Award from Pratt Institute, and in 2011, received the Spirit of Design Award from Philadelphia University.
