The Specials are a venerated 2tone-ska group from England, having broken up and re-formed through numerous line-ups. The group started with songwriter and keyboardist Jerry Dammers forming a group which was originally called The Coventry Automatics, then Special AKA. Their break came when they opened for the band The Clash on a UK tour. Dammers formed the 2Tone records label (the name of this genre of music comes from that label), and Elvis Costello produced for them on their self-titled debut.

The Specials as good as pioneered ska in the UK, reviving it with a punk rock influence. Their first two albums certified gold, while their singles repeatedly charted in the top ten, with “Too Much Too Young” (1980) and “Ghost Town” (1981) charting #1 on the UK Singles chart. The Specials at one time or another have mixed personnel with the groups Fun Boy Three, Madness, the Libertines, and the Skabilly Rebels.
