The Replacements were a punk rock band from the Midwest, with a storied reputation that has cast a long shadow of influence. They started out as a punk band and evolved into more of a pop band in their later years. There is a world of difference between their first studio album “Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash” (1981) and their 1991 video “When It Began,” mellowing out almost to country rock. They’re on hiatus after a brief revival in 2012-2015.
The Replacements’ original members were continuous members Paul Westerberg (lead vocals, guitars), Tommy Stinson (bass), and Chris Mars (drums), with the rotating cast of Bob Stinson and Slim Dunlap on lead guitar. Despite their faded star, artists such as The Goo Goo Dolls, The Cribs, Uncle Tupelo, and Whiskeytown have cited The Replacements as an influence.
