Tarana Janeen Burke, better known as Tarana Burke, is a civil rights activist and the founder of the Me Too movement. She was born on September 12, 1973, in New York City, New York, who after having experienced rape and sexual assault as a child and a teenager, began to work with young girls who were living in marginalized communities to help them improve their lives, using her own experience with sexual assault. After graduating from Auburn University, Tarana Burke moved to Selma, Alabama, to work with survivors of sexual violence until 2006 when she founded the Me Too movement, to raise awareness about sexual assault and abuse in society. In 2017, Tarana Burke was named Time Person of the Year by Time magazine. In 2018, she received the 2018 Prize for Courage from The Ridenhour Prizes.
