Steve Tomas Lacy-Moya (born May 23, 1998), better known by his stage name, Steve Lacy, is an American singer, songwriter, producer and guitarist. He is best known for co-producing and being the lead guitarist for Grammy nominated R&B group, The Internet. He learned the guitar at the age of 7 and began to produce music during his high school days. Born and raised in Compton California, he was part of his high school jazz band where he befriended Jameel Burner, who introduced him to The Internet and it’s group members, Matt Martians, Syd, Patrick Paige II and Jameel Burner. Steve produced the band’s third studio album, Ego Death, in 2015 with a majority of the album being created on the GarageBand app on his iPhone. In the same year, he released his first solo single, ‘C U Girl’ which currently has 39 million plays on Spotify. Ego Death became a Grammy nominated album in 2016 for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Whilst still being a part of The Internet, Steve released his second solo single, ‘Some’ in 2016 with 21 million views, followed by his third and most popular single, ‘Dark Red’ in 2017 with a whooping 51 million. Steve is known for his sunny R&B and funk sound and is no stranger to the R&B scene, producing hits for Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Solange and Vampire Weekend amongst many others. His most recent album, ‘Apollo XXI’ was released in 2019, with single ‘N-Side’ having 15 million plays on Spotify. Due to his exponential talent at such a young age, he was invited by Nile Rodgers to hold his own lecture in New York for TEDxTeen in 2017.
