Shea Serrano is an author and journalist born on June 1, 1981, in San Antonio, Texas, USA. He initially worked as a middle-school science teacher in the Houston area. He began writing in 2007, briefly writing for the Near Northwest Banner and freelancing for the Houston Press.
In July 2015, he joined Grantland's full-time staff and moved to Bill Simmons' The Ringer in July 2016. He has written for GQ, ESPN, LA Weekly, XXL, Rolling Stone, MTV, and Vice. Shea has appeared on Desus & Mero and Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso. He published his first book, Bun B's Rap Coloring and Activity Book, on September 17, 2013.
The Sam Houston State University alum followed it with The Rap Year Book: The Most Important Rap Song From Every Year Since 1979, Discussed, Debated, and Deconstructed on October 13, 2015. Billboard listed it as one of the 100 best music books of all-time in September 2016. The New York Times Best Seller founded a publishing house, Halfway Books, in 2020. His other books are Basketball (and Other Things) (2017) and Movies (And Other Things) (2019).
