Nigel John Dermot Neill, also known as Sam Neill is an Irish-born and New-Zealand-based actor born in 1947 in Omagh, Northern Ireland. He was raised in Christchurch, New Zealand, and earned a degree in English Literature at the Victoria University. After some leading parts in New Zealand film, he got his first international role in 1981’s “Omen III: The Final Conflict and Dead Calm.” In 1983 he was nominated for the Golden Globe after his lead performance in “Reilly, Ace of Spies.” In the 1990s he gained widespread attention on account of his appearances in “The Piano” as Alisdair Stewart, and as Dr. Alan Grant in “Jurassic Park” and the subsequent franchises’ sequels. In 1998 he appeared as the folk-tale wizard Merlin in the “Merlin” miniseries, and portrays an important character in Netflix’s-distributed “Peaky Blinders.” Neill’s work has earned him royal distinctions as Officer of the Order of the British Empire, and Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
