Ray Parker Jr. is an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer and actor born in Detroit, Michigan on May 1, 1954. He is best known for writing and performing the theme song to the 1984 film Ghostbusters. At six years old he was inspired by his elementary school music teacher to become a musician. In the late 1960s he was part of Bohannon’s house band at 20 Grand nightclub in Detroit, Michigan. At 16 years old recorded and co-wrote his first songs with Marvin Gaye. In 1973 he became a sideman in Barry White’s The Love Unlimited Orchestra. Parker created the R&B group Raydio in 1997 with Jerry Knight, Arnell Carmichael, and Vincent Bonham. The band became known as Ray Parker Jr. and Raydio in 1980. Together they released the albums Raydio, Rock On, Two Places at the Same Time, and A Woman Needs Love. The band broke up in 1981 and Parker started his solo career. He released his debut solo album in 1982 titled The Other Woman. The album charted at number 11 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, number 1 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number 27 in Australia. He has since released the albums Woman Out of Control, Sex and the Single Man, After Dark, I Love You Like You Are, and I’m Free. Parker has also made acting appearances in the shows Gimme a Break, Pryor’s Place, Enemy Territory, Uptown Saturday Night and more.
