Singer, songwriter, musician and record producer Raphael Saadiq was born Charles Ray Wiggins on May 14, 1966 in Oakland, California. He began playing bass guitar at the age of six and at nine he started singing in a local gospel choir. In 1984, he was chosen to play bass for Sheila E.’s backing band when the singer served as the opening act for Prince’s Parade tour. When he returned from the two-year tour, Saadiq began his professional career as the lead vocalist and bassist in the R&B trio Tony! Toni! Toné!, alongside his brother, Dwayne Wiggins and cousin Timothy Christian. The group released their first album, Who?, in 1998 and followed that up with 1990’s The Revival, which contained the hit single “Feels Good.” Their third album, Sons of Soul, was released in 1993 and contained the Top 10 singles “If I Had No Loot” and “Anniversary.” They released a fourth album, House of Music, in 1996 before going their separate ways.
In 1999, Saadiq joined the R&B supergroup Lucy Pearl, which released only one album. He collaborated with Q-Tip on the song “Get Involved” from the animated series The PJs. In 2002, he released his debut solo album, Instant Vintage, which received five Grammy nominations. He followed that up with Ray Ray (2004) and The Way I See It (2008.) In addition to his own music, Saadiq has collaborated with dozens of artists, including Whitney Houston, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, and John Legend. He produced Joss Stone’s 2007 album Introducing Joss Stone and LaToya Luckett’s Lady Love in 2009. Saadiq released the album, Stone Rollin’, on March 5, 2011.
