Our Native Daughters is a group of singers made up of four black American female banjo players; Amythyst Kiah, Allison Russell, Leyla McCalla, and Rhiannon Giddens. Rhiannon Giddens is the founder and leader of the group. And since she’s the most experienced she was the leader of the group. Gidden’s string work, Caroline Chocolate Drops is a Grammy Award winner. She received the MacArthur Fellowship genius grant and the Steve Martin Prize for her excellence in playing banjo and bluegrass. Their hit album, Songs of Our Native Daughters was released back in February 2019 through the Smithsonian Folkways record label. The album was co-produced by Rhiannon Giddens and Dirk Powell (who have won four grammy awards) and was a close friend of Giddens. The album Songs of Our Native Daughters was named one of the best albums of 2019 by NPR, and the group was nominated for group of the year at the 2020 Americana Awards.
