Meklit Hadero is an Ethiopian singer and songwriter who was born in Addis Ababa to African parents. She moved with her parents to the United States and she was raised in Iowa and Brooklyn. Hadero also earned a degree in Political Science from Yale but she continued down her singer path. She was introduced into the music world by the jazz music of Billie Holiday as an adolescent.

Hadero’s debut album On a Day Like This… appeared in 2010. It was quickly followed by a full-band collaboration with singer and songwriter Quinn Deveaux which appeared as Meklit & Quinn in 2012. After she entered the studio with her quartet and some guest artists, she reappeared with We Are Alive. The piece dropped in 2014 and was released by Six Degrees. Some of Hadero’s singles include Sweet or Salty (2018) and This Was Made Here (2019).
