He graduated from Evergreen Valley High School in San Jose and studied nutrition at the Mission College Santa Clara, California, and planned to become a professional dietitian. At 17 in 2010, Matt entered a local lobster roll eating contest in Hampton Beach New Hampshire, and won the $1000 prize. That was also where he made the decision to be a competitive eater. In 2015 he broke Joey Chestnut’s record of eight straight titles at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest by winning the competition in 2015.
