Luis Enrique, born Luis Enrique Mejia Lopez on September 28th, 1962 in Nicaragua is a singer and composer. Luis began singing at a young age and began his music career in the late 1980’s. He is known as one of Latin music’s first pioneers in the salsa romantica/salsa sensual genre of music. He laid the groundwork for artists such as Marc Anthony and Victor Manuelle to thrive in the Latin music scene.

Luis began his musical career after impressing producers Alex Cobos and Frank Miret during an audition for a salsa band. They took Luis to the studio to record a solo demo which landed him a deal with Sony Music in 1987. He released his debut album in the same year called Amor de Media Noche. In 1988 he followed up with the release of the album Amor y Alegria.

In 1989 Luis released the album entitled Mi Mundo. It was in this year that his career took off with international recognition. Luis won a Lo Nuestro Award in 1989 for Best Tropical/Salsa New Artist of the Year. In 1990 he won 3 Lo Nuestro Awards for Topical Salsa Male Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Salsa Song of the Year. Luis has gone on to release 12 more albums up to 2014.
