The revolutionary singer and producer Lee Scratch Perry was born Rainford Hugh Perry on March 20th 1936 in Kendal, Jamaica. Perry got a job at the iconic Jamaican record label and record studio, Studio One, and worked his way up the company writing catchy songs, like Chicken Scratch. After leaving Studio One, he formed his own label, Upsetter Records, and formed The Upsetters. He built his own studio, named Black Ark, where many songs were produced, until it burnt down. Bob Marley sought out Perry for musical guidance, and he helped Marley record some of his early music. Lee was instrumental in the Jamaican music scene and produced work not only for Bob, but Max Romeo, Junior Murvin, The Congos, and countless others. He also produced, wrote and collaborated with The Clash, The Beastie Boys, and The Slits’ Ari Up. Some of Perry’s iconic work includes Disco Devil, Upsetters 14 Dub Blackboard Jungle, Police & Thieves, Return of Django, Heart of the Congos, Super Ape, Party Time, ina Babylon, Complete Control, Roast Fish Corn Bread & Collie Weed, and a collaboration with Bob Marley, Soul Revolution.
