Tetsuya Ogawa, the bassist for the Japanese rock band L'Arc-en-Ciel, founded the group in 1991. Two members of the original lineup left the group in 1992, but Ogawa was able to find replacements and kept the group going. In April 1993, the band released their first full-length album named Dune, debuted at the top of the indie charts, and assisted in securing them a major-label deal with Sony in 1994. L'Arc-en-Ciel released their next two albums, 1995's Heavenly and 1996's True, in quick succession as their popularity increased. A 1997 drug bust involving the band's drummer Sakura led to a decline in sales. Later in 1997, the band staged a sellout concert in Tokyo with new drummer Yukihiro by their side. In 2007, L'Arc-en-Ciel came back together, put out the album Kiss, and started a tour that would span from December 2007 to February 2008. The band later agreed to a deal with HMV in the United States.
