The jazz and rock guitarist John McLaughlin was born in England on January 4, 1942. John McLaughlin, one of the most accomplished guitarists in fusion, used his blistering speed to further a spiritual quest that has kept his music growing to new inspirations. McLaughlin's ferocity and adaptability have kept his playing relevant whether he is tearing it up on an electric guitar or simmering softly on an acoustic. His finest performances may be heard on some of fusion's greatest albums, like Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and Tribute to Jack Johnson, as well as his own Mahavishnu Orchestra's landmark The Inner Mounting Flame (1971) and Birds of Fire (1973). He established the acoustic Indo-jazz group Shakti in 1976, which went on to produce three critically praised albums. He then proceeded to split his time between electric and acoustic ventures. The most well-known works are Friday Night in San Francisco with guitarists Al Di Meola and Paco de Lucia in 1981. On Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time, he was placed number 49.
