Rapper/singer Jidenna was born Jidenna Theodore Mobisson on May 4, 1985 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. He spent his early childhood living in his father’s native Nigeria, eventually moving to the suburbs of Boston. Jidenna attended the prestigious Milton Academy, where he rapped in a group called the Black Spades and recorded his first album as a final project. He went on to attend Stanford University. After college, he earned a living teaching a high school hip-hop music program in New York City.
Jidenna eventually signed to Janelle Monae’s Wondaland Records and in February 2015, his “Classic Man” was the lead single from the label’s artist compilation EP, The Eephus. “Classic Man” peaked at #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and went on to earn a 2016 Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Sung performance. A remix of the song featured Kendrick Lamar, and another version was featured in the 2016 Oscar-winning film, Moonlight.
In 2016, Jidenna released single “Long Live The Chief,” and made a cameo performance on Netflix original series Luke Cage. The single was included on his debut studio album, The Chief, released in 2017.
