About Iron & Wine
Iron & Wine is the stage name for Samuel (Sam) Beam, who was born July 26, 1974 in Chapin, South Carolina. Throughout his childhood he moved to Virginia and Florida and currently resides in North Carolina. Before Iron & Wine, Beam worked as a professor of film and cinematography at the University of Miami and the Miami International University of Art & Design. Since his musical career began in 2002, he has released five studio albums, several EPs and singles, a few download-only releases, and a live recording of his 2005 Bonnaroo performance. He is known for his soft indie-folk sound.
His first Iron & Wine album, The Creek Drank the Cradle, was released in 2002 and was written, produced, recorded, and performed in his personal home studio. His next album, Our Endless Numbered Days, was released in 2004 and featured the popular song “Naked as We Came”. His third album, The Shepherd’s Dog, was released in 2007 and was voted one of the ten best of 2007 by Paste magazine. His fourth studio album, Kiss Each Other Clean, was released in 2011. His fifth album, Ghost on Ghost, was released in 2013 and featured more R&B and jazz influences. Sing Into My Mouth, a compilation with Ben Bridwell, was released in 2015.
His music has been featured in numerous television programs and films, including (but not limited to) The OC and Garden State. His single “Flightless Bird, American Mouth” was featured in the popular film Twilight and handpicked by star Kristen Stewart for the film. His cover of the Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights” has been used in advertisements for both M&Ms and Match.com.
