Cristian Ignacio Garin Medone, professionally called Cristian Garin, is a popular Chilean tennis player prominent for his right-handed and two-handed backhand plays. Born on May 30, 1996 in Arica, he is the youngest Chilean tennis player to win a match at the ATP Tour at 16.
The Chilean started his career as a junior, participating at the 2010 U-14 world championship, which he eventually won. The following year, he won his first ITF Junior title at the Pascuas Bowl. His win at the Orange Bowl Doubles helped him to break into the top ten ITF Junior Rankings in 2012. His first Junior Grand Slam title win was the 2013 French Open, where he defeated Alexander Zverev of Germany in straight sets.
Garin turned pro in 2011, and broke into the ATP ranking after defeating Felipe Mantilla. His debut ATP Challenger match came in the 2012 Cachantun Cup against Fernando Romboli, which he lost. His first pro win came in 2013, when he defeated Dusan Lajovic at the 2013 VTR Open. With that win, he became the youngest Chilean to win an ATP Tour match.
Garin’s performances earned him the number 17 spot in the ATP Singles rankings, his highest ever position in September 2021. He has a career record of 97-88 in Singles and 12-31 in Doubles. He has won five ATP Tour titles in his career, all on clay.
