American icon, singer, and actress Cher was born Cherilyn Sarkisian on May 20, 1946, in El Centro, California. Her mother, who divorced her father when she was only an infant, moved the family around a lot and were frequently very poor. Nevertheless, Cher was noted for her creativity even as a young girl. She dropped out of high school when she was 16 and moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. It was there that she met Sonny Bono, a singer, who invited her to be his housekeeper. Cher would also provide background vocals for record producer Phil Spector, with whom Bono was working at the time. They married in 1964, and performed many songs together under the name “Caesar & Cleo”, which they eventually changed to Sonny & Cher in 1965. After she and Sonny divorced in 1975, she began performing completely solo, becoming a popular live act in Las Vegas. In 1988, Cher won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the movie Moonstruck, establishing herself not only as a gifted singer but as a talented actress. She would go on to release a total of 25 studio albums, a handful of which went Platinum, and has released a variety of top-ten singles, including “If I Could Turn Back Time”, “Believe”, and “I Found Someone”. “Believe” won her the Grammy Award in 2000 for Best Dance Recording, and in her career has sold more than 100 million albums as a solo artist as well as more than 40 million albums with Sonny.
