Singer/songwriter Carole King was born Carol Joan Klein in Manhattan in 1942. She had learned to play the piano by the age of four, and while in high school, adopted the name Carole King when she joined the band the Co-Sines. She and her future husband Gerry Goffin met and began collaborating to write songs, ultimately penning the song “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” which was recorded by the Shirelles and became a #1 hit in the United States. The two would write a variety of mega hits, including “Pleasant Valley Sunday” for the Monkees and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” for Aretha Franklin.
Gerry Goffin and Carole King divorced and went their separate ways, and shortly after, she released her debut album Writer in 1970, which she followed with Tapestry, featuring the #1 hit “It’s Too Late” and earning her four Grammy Awards. Carole King would release more than a dozen studio albums in her career, and collaborated with artists such as B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and a handful of others. Aside from a very successful singing and songwriting career, she has also appeared in Broadway and off-Broadway productions.
