Buffalo Tom was initially a trio band formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts while in College at the University of Massachusetts. The trio that formed the group were guitarist/vocalist Bill Janovitz, bassist/vocalist Chris Colbourn, and drummer Tom Maginnis.

Their first album in 1989 got them a lot of criticism and some homework to work on. Birdbrain was released in 1990 and it was a lot better and showed their improvement in songwriting. They released Let Me Come Over in 1992 which had several of its tracks playing as radio staples, especially the ballad Taillights Fade. Although the album didn’t sell as much as they thought, they continue making good music. Big Red Letter Day was released in 1993 and Sleepy Eyed in the summer of 1995 and Smitten in 1998. After a decade of inactivity, they returned with a full-length album Three Easy Pieces under the New West label. In March 2018 they released what seemed like their final album Quiet and Peace.
