About Black Uhuru
Jamaica's Black Uhuru, the most popular of the second-generation reggae bands, managed to retain their high calibre despite several personnel changes throughout the course of their many years together. The band was founded in 1972 by Simpson, Don Carlos, and Rudolph "Garth" Dennis in Kingston's Waterhouse neighborhood. The name of the group is derived from the Swahili word for "freedom." Black Uhuru, was the first reggae band to win a Grammy (for their 1983 album Anthem), providing a dynamic and forward-thinking sound during their peak in the 1970s and early 1980s. A reunion of the band's original lineup, led by stalwart Derrick "Duckie" Simpson, enjoyed fresh critical acclaim in the early 1990s with records like Now and Strongg before the group broke up into feuding factions and a lawsuit that gave Simpson ownership of the band name, which he used on the 2001 album Dynasty. In 2022, Black Uhuru released their album New Day in honor of their 50th anniversary.
