About Berliner Philharmoniker
Berliner Philharmoniker is a German orchestra that was formed in 1882 in Berlin, Imperial Germany. The original orchestra had 50 founding members and the group was initially called the Frühere Bilsesche Kapelle, choosing Ludwig von Brenner as their first conductor.
Some of the prominent members are Andreas Wittmann, Bruno Delepelaire, David Riniker, Fergus McWilliam, Marion Reinhard, Michael Hasel, and Stephan Koncz. In 1887 Hans von Bülow became the group’s conductor and many guest conductors like Johannes Brahms, Edvard Grieg, Gustav Mahler, and Richard Strauss were also featured. The orchestra won their first Grammy for Best Opera Recording in 1970 during Herbert von Karajan’s tenure as conductor. When Claudio Abbado took over, the group collected five more Grammys including one for Best Orchestral Recording for a 1979 performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 9 with Leonard Bernstein that was issued in 1992.
Their other major awards include a Grammy for Best Orchestral Recording (1993), Best Chamber Music Performance (1995), Best Small Ensemble Performance (1998), Best Classical Vocal Performance (2000), and Best Orchestral Performance (2001).
