Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is a German orchestra band founded in Berlin in 1882 by 54 musicians under the name Fruhere Belaseshe Kapelle after breaking away from their previous conductor Benjamin Bilse who wanted to take the band on a train to Warsaw for a concert. In 1882 they renamed and reorganized under the financial management of Hermann Wolf. They chose Ludwig von Brenner to conduct the orchestra. A few years later in 1887 Hans von Bulow became the new conductor of the orchestra. Over the years people like Richard Strauss, Felix von Weingartner, Hans Richter, and others have conducted the orchestra. The first woman to conduct the orchestra came in 1887 when pianist and composer Mary Wurm took the post. Some of their principal conductors over the years have been Leo Borchard, Sergiu Celibidache, Herbert von Karajan, Sir Simon Rattle, Arthur Nikisch, Kirill Petrenko and others. In 2008 they announced the creation of their digital concert hall that allowed people from all over the world to hear their concerts whenever they wanted. Since the creation of the orchestra they have received a number of awards, including eight Grammy Awards, two BRIT Awards, six Gramophone Awards, four ECHO Awards, and many more.
