Kevin Gilliam, better known by his stage name Battlecat, born on April 20, 1968, in Long Beach, California, is an American record producer. He emerged as a DJ in the LA electro-rap scene in the late 80s before emerging as the most desired West Coast hip hop producer in the mid-90s. He made a name for himself by laying down beats for Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Kurupt, Tha Eastsidaz, and many more West Coast rappers. Battlecat’s aesthetic is a progression from the early 90s g-funk sound pioneered by Cold 187um and Dr. Dre.
His debut album titled Gumbo Roots was intended to be released in 1995, but instead got released years later. Battlecat’s production is immense, and some of these best productions include E-40’s Nahm Nah…, Snoop Dogg’s Stacey Adams, and Xzibit’s Been a Long Time. These tracks bring a laid-back funky soul and a traditionally gangsta rap sound. Doggy’s Angels single Baby If You’re Ready produced by Battlecat, spent multiple weeks at the top of Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles chart in 2000.
