Bai Ling is a Chinese actress who was born on October 10 1966 in Chengdu, China. Bai began her acting career when she was just fourteen years old. She enlisted in the Chinese People’s Liberation Army joining a performance troupe entertaining soldiers stationed in Tibet. She also took acting classes at The Lee Strasberg Institute and New York University in 1991.
Bai became famous when she got the lead role in Jon Avnet’s 1997 blockbuster Red Corner. Her acting won the Breakthrough Performance Award from the National Board of Review and she also got the Discovery Star from the Hollywood Women’s Press Club for their Golden Apple Awards.
Some of her first English films include Nixon in 1995, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sixth (2005), Wild Wild West (1999), She Hate Me (2004), Anna and the King (1999), Ang Lee in The Wedding Banquet (1993), Alex Proyas in The Crow (1994) and Taxi 3 (2003). Her performance got the highest acclaim in the first Hong Kong movie Three Extremes: Dumplings in 2004.
