Joy Olasunmibo Ogunmakin, known as Ayo, is a Nigerian-German singer-songwriter and actress, born on September 14, 1980, in Germany. Ayo means joy in Yoruba, and her father was the one who gave her the idea to use it as a stage name. She rose to fame with her 2006 debut album titled Joyful.

Due to her mother’s substance abuse, she spent time in a children’s home in Schwalmtal-Waldniel where she learned to play the piano and violin. At the age of 14, she moved with her father where she would regularly listen to his record collection including Pink Floyd and Jimmy Cliff which noticeably influenced her musical input. The self-taught guitarist has been making a sweet mixture of jazz, soul, reggae, and afrobeat tunes.

In 2011 she released her third album titled Billie-Eve featuring Saul Williams, Craig Ross, and Gail Ann Dorsey, and the album appeared on the Top 10 in Belgium and France. Her first role as an actress was in the movie Murder in Pacot, by the Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck. A couple of years later he was part of the German science fiction drama VOLT which landed her a nomination at the Filmfest Munchen 2016.
