Anna Yuryevna Netrebko

Anna Yuryevna Netrebko (September 18, 1971) is a Russian Royal Opera singer known for her soprano vocals and compelling stage presence. Anna had always been interested in pursuing music and had studied at the Petersburg State Conservatory as well as the Leningrad Conservatory. While studying, she took a cleaning job at the Mariinsky Theatre that allowed her to watch rehearsals of the ballets and operas. Still carving her own path, Anna entered the Mikhail Glinka vocal competition in 1993 and won first prize. She then auditioned for a support role for Mozart’s ‘Le nozza di Figaro’ at the Mariinsky Opera in 1994 and was successfully casted for the opera. Due to her vocal prowess, director Valery Gergiev, moved her from a support role to the opera’s leading role as Susanna. Valery Gergiev then became Anna’s mentor and casted her for the San Francisco Opera, ‘Glinka’s Russlan and Lyudmila’. This skyrocketed Anna’s opera career and began to sing for other roles in London’s Covent Garden in 2000, New York’s Metropolitan Opera in 2002 and the Los Angeles Opera in 2003 along with several performances at the Salzburg Festival. In 2004, she receieved the State Prize of the Russian Federation and in 2007, Time magazine added her to the Time 100 list. In the same year she received Singer of the Year at the Classical Brit Awards. Whilst performing back and forth from the U.S. and Europe, Anna gave birth to her first son in 2008 temporarily withdrawing from her opera career. She quickly resumed her career in 2009 performing at both the Zurich Opera and San Francisco Opera followed by shows in Berlin, London and regular performances at the Metropolitan and Salzburg Opera. Amongst Anna’s many awards, she has recently been awarded the Swedish Polar Music Prize in 2020 with her “magnificent voice and glowing charisma, she is a larger-than-life singer who keeps the classics alive” as said on the Polar Music Prize website.
