The longtime Los Angeles Kings blueliner joins CAA’s hockey group, co-headed by veteran sports agent Pat Brisson.

Doughty has spent his entire NHL career with Los Angeles since the franchise selected him second overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Over his 18-season NHL career and more than 1,180 regular-season games, he has built a first-ballot Hall of Fame résumé.

He won two Stanley Cups in 2012 and 2014, received the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman in 2016, and secured two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada in 2010 and 2014.

After recovering from a fractured ankle suffered in the 2024 preseason, Doughty returned to top-pairing form, anchoring the Kings’ defense through 72 games in 2025–26 and stepping into the 2026–27 campaign as a cornerstone leader.

The agreement marks a pivotal step in Doughty’s management history. Newport Sports Management represented him early in his NHL career. In July 2018, however, Doughty chose to represent himself, working with family and union counsel to negotiate an eight-year, $88 million contract extension that keeps him in Los Angeles through 2027.

By aligning with CAA, Doughty gains comprehensive corporate infrastructure to manage brand endorsements, philanthropic ventures, and upcoming media opportunities right in the Kings’ home market.

Doughty’s addition highlights CAA’s active roster expansion across major sports throughout 2026. In basketball, Sacramento Kings All-Star Domantas Sabonis joined CAA Basketball to steer his global commercial ventures, while in combat sports, former two-time unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua broadened his commercial footprint by aligning with CAA Sports in partnership with 258 Group.

Takeaways

Drew Doughty’s decision to sign with CAA provides a telling look at how elite athletes approach the later stages of their careers. When Doughty negotiated his own $88 million deal in 2018, he proved that a franchise cornerstone could successfully bypass agent commissions for a direct team extension.

Entering the final stretch of that contract, however, an athlete’s priorities shift. Modern sports stars no longer lean on agencies strictly to negotiate with general managers; they need full-service teams to coordinate high-value brand partnerships, entertainment ventures, and post-retirement media development.

Headquartered in Century City, Los Angeles, CAA gives Doughty an ideal home-turf advantage to build his long-term commercial legacy while he continues to lead the Kings on the ice.

Will CAA focus primarily on preparing Drew Doughty’s future broadcasting and media career, or will they handle his next NHL contract extension? Does Doughty’s signing show that self-represented athletes eventually need full-scale agency resources for their off-ice brands?

Two-time Stanley Cup champion Drew Doughty has officially signed with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) for agency representation.
