Michael Nyqvist was born as Rolf Åke Mikael Nyqvist on November 8, 1960 in Stockholm, Sweden. His first experience acting was as a high school senior in Nebraska after his dreams of being a famous hockey player were crushed due to an injury. He was eventually accepted into the prestigious Malmö Theatre Academy back in Sweden. His first popular role was in the Beck series, which premiered in 1997. The film Together (2000) earned him his initial Guldbagge Best Actor nomination, and that would lead to several more nominations and wins. These included winning Best Actor at the Gijón International Film Festival in 2000; winning Best Ensemble Acting in 2004; being nominated for Best Performance by an Actor at the International Emmy Awards in 2011; and being nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in 2016, among several others. He most recently won the Guldbagge Award for the Best Supporting Actor.

He became known internationally for his part as Mikael in 2009’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Director Brad Baird then picked Nyqvist to play a role in the popular Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol alongside Tom Cruise in 2011. Another major accomplishment of his was that he was a permanent member of the Royal Dramatic Theatre. He was friends with several popular colleagues such as the American actor Greg Poehler, and he appeared on-screen opposite popular American actors such as Keanu Reeves in John Wick (2014). Nyqvist passed away on June 27, 2017 after a battle with lung cancer.
