Laura Douglass, known better to the world as Laura Mvula, was born in Birmingham, England, on April 23, 1986. She first gained attention as a serious jazz and pop singer in 2012 when she performed at the iTunes Festival that year. She was signed to RCA, and shortly after, released her first EP entitled She. The BBC was the first big-name company to pick up her music, and once they did, her fame quickly increased.
In 2013, Laura Mvula released her first studio album, Sing to the Moon. The tracks on this album, along with her unique sound and pop, jazz, and gospel combinations earned her a nomination for the BBC’s Sound of 2013 poll. Mvula won the #4 spot on that poll. Later that year, her album went to #9 on the UK Album Charts and then to #173 in the United States on the Billboard 200 chart. Laura Mvula followed up her first album release with a completely orchestral version of Sing to the Moon, released in 2014.
