Hootie & The Blowfish is perhaps the single band that personified MTV market over-saturation in the 1990s. The Atlantic-Records-fostered group got shoved out onto every stage and showered with every award, pushed to the top of every chart. They were the alternative-rock corporate band, precursors to the modern Nickelback, making Salon magazine’s “The 15 most hated bands of the last 30 years,” TWTHS’s “The 10 Worst Bands. Ever.” and L.A.Weekly’s “Top 20 Worst Bands of All Time: The Complete List.”
Which is not to say that Hootie & The Blowfish weren’t a competent band. As a blues pop band, they could produce some hum-able tunes. Their initial album launched like n ICBM alpha strike, certified multi-platinum worldwide before it was even pressed, but after that headwind they managed to coast for a couple more albums on their own, showing up on charts as late as 2005.
