About Dream Theater
Dream Theater is an American metal band from Boston, Massachusetts. Formed in 1985, guitarist John Petrucci (July 12, 1967) drummer Mike Portnoy (April 20, 1967) and bassist John Myung (January 24, 1967) met at the Berklee College of Music and started to perform as a trio. Eventually, the trio named themselves Majesty and filled out Chris Collin as their vocalist and Kevin Moore on the keyboard. A year later, the band faced some changes; after releasing a collection of demos, Chris Collin was replaced by Charlie Dominici and due to another Las Vegas group called Majesty threatened to sue, the band eventually evolved to being the Dream Theater. By 1989, Charlie Dominici left Dream Theater and the band found difficulties in finding a replacement singer that suited the band’s sound. Eventually, in 1991, vocalist Kevin James LaBrie (May 5, 1963) sent the band a demo tape and Dream Theater immediately hired LaBrie. The band went on to perform around New York City and their progressive rock sound got them a signing to division of Elektra Records, Atco Records. Dream Theater’s second full length album titled ‘Images and Words’ was released in 1992 and received much airplay for their single, ‘Pull Me Under’. The single from the album was a success and the album achieved a gold certification along with global demand from the band in Europe and Japan. Over the course of the 90’s, the band experienced many member changes until 1999 where the band solidified their line-up including Petrucci, Myung, LaBrie, Portonoy and new keyboardist Jordan Rudess (November 5, 1956). Into the 2000’s, the band produced 9 albums preceded by their first four albums. In 2010, Dream Theater replaced Portnoy on drums with Mike Mangini (April 18, 1963) and the band prevailed, still being active in music today. Throughout their career, the band has produced 14 studio albums and has gone on 27 tours, adding another to the list in 2020.
