Born Michelle Lynn Johnson (August 1968), Meshell Ndegeocello is a Grammy nominated American singer, songwriter, rapper and bassist. Born in Germany, Meshell Ndegeocello and her family relocated to Virginia in the early 70’s. Meshell had auditioned for several bands after graduating college and was eventually signed to Madonna’s Warner Music affiliated label, Maverick. She released her debut album in 1993 titled ‘Plantation Lullabies’ with the production help of David Gamson, DJ Premier, Bob Power amongst many others. The album’s single, ‘If That’s Your Boyfriend (He Wasn’t Last Night)’ became a huge success, receiving two Grammy nominations in 1994. The album itself was also nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Album. Meshell’s next release came in 1996 titled ‘Peace Beyond Passion’ which hit the Billboard 200 at number 63 on it’s debut. ‘Peace Beyond Passion’ also received a Grammy nomination that same year. The R&B vocalist took a three year break before she released ‘Bitter’ in 1999 followed by ‘Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape’ in 2002. Her discography grew over the course of the 2000’s releasing ‘Comfort Woman’ in 2003, ‘The Spirit Musi Jamia’ in 2005, ‘The World Has Made Me The Man of My Dreams’ in 2007, ‘Devil’s Halo’ in 2009, ‘Weather’ in 2011, ‘Pour une Ame Souveraine’ in 2012, ‘Comet, Come to Me’ in 2014 and ‘Ventriloquism’ in 2018. Along with her long discography, Meshell’s songs and vocals have been featured in 13 film soundtracks and has collaborated with The Rolling Stones, Basement Jaxx, the Indigo Girls amongst many others. Meshell is said to have sparked the neo-soul movement with her influential music.
